Sewage works
In comparison to Europe and the USA, the start of water measurement in Japan was delayed and mainly concerned with wastewater purification. By the end of the 2008 fiscal year, it could be seen that 71.7 percent of the population was serviced by a public sewerage system. However, the need to further increase connections remains important.
In order to allow purified water to flow into rivers and semi-closed water areas (such as lakes and marshes), water quality improvement is required. This, together with the diversification of people’s needs related to sewer pipeline facilities in large urban areas and enforced city planning is needed to prevent the accidental pollution caused by floods or earthquakes.
For the benefit of both the environment and society, amenity areas (that can be used for various purposes) can be created above wastewater treatment plants or pumping stations.
Also, the change of society in recent years (including the decline in birthrate and the proportional growth of the elderly) necessitates a more considerate business scheme and implementation.
